“pipes” series

walking past. out of place…i saw a shop. easily catching my attention was the shops pipes of different shapes, sizes and colors. all stacked in a seemingly senseless array. right up against the sidewalk. it boggled my mind for some time and having my camera with me, i pulled out my camera and shot at as many angles and compositions as my mind could muster. this is what i came up with.

playing around in photoshop, i took an image (silhouette with exposed background…) and inverted it, put it at 25% opacity, toyed with the color balance and called it a picture…

i like the way that inverting the image, at a low opacity gives it a dreamy, surreal, vintage feel…using the color balance mimics film processing, with yellow, magenta and red tones.

of large tubes. future power.

went up to the land of flat, fargo, in the state of north dakota this past weekend. friend joe and i spent some time perusing about a large yard with power wind mills in various stages of completion. the base or stem (whatever you wanna call it…) of these wind mills were strewn about the yard and provided an excellent realm for photography. it was a good weekend and great day for taking photos…

this photo is from the inside of one of the mammoth pieces. we messed around with some flashes, odd angles and poses and figured out that just about anything done inside one of these things looked pretty damn cool.

the next one is from outside of the tubes…a wide angle vantage of the tubes stretching across an overexposed sky. the raindrops on tubes catch the light nicely and help the frames appeal.

my boots are still muddy from the muck/mud that was surrounding the entire yard. worth every atom of it though!

most likely there are more to come…but for now, this is what ive got.

in blizzard outdoors, warm hearts and cold feet explored boston, mass. seeing many things and soaking parts many more, snowflakes combined to create exceptional beauty. tiring rewards and delights were had in this city. coffee too. though socks soaked still hang over furniture. reminder of steps/strides/slush…drying.

the world of headshots, nyc

hey all…

since last being updated i spent some time with a good friend, laura who is an actress in new york…needing some headshots (laura) and needing some good examples of work (scott) we got together for a few hours in one of the bars she works at in the city. it had decent amount of ambient light, interesting backdrops and overall more character than the florescent lit white room that was the other option… a few poses and a few outfits later we came out with some decent stuff. some of the things she really wanted for her shots were a super shallow DOF (achieved at f.1.4) and quite soft light (brolly, my love)…fairly happy with the results though i havent spent much time with them yet. it was interesting to learn about headshots and how different they are than i originally thought…i guess im a bit more dramatic with lighting and poses.

upon reading my friend dylan’s blog today (welkinlight.wordpress.com)…i was impressed to see that he had gone back to take another look at missed opportunities…photos that missed the cut. no editing, first round. he decided to make a second round and he definitely found something. i was hoping to end up with similar results, but im afraid that i need to be a more efficient sifter…i did manage to get this though, from a trip made in south korea. SOUTH south korea…fishingthesunsettingwaters…

its interesting to think about your own photographs this way… the ones you take and are immediately impressed. you know “its” there. your style. but the more valuable shots, to me, are the ones that do not appear to have these qualities right away, but rather have some sort of subliminal photographic merit that you need to discover upon a second look. time passing. this particular shot doesnt qualify, i just had an overload of frames from this spot and was lazy really. it went overlooked, like so many…but i certainly came across photos that i was happy to see again…

this here is a better example of what im talking about…

i knew in my mind what was going on on a photographic level. abstract composition with motion and texture…a unique color combination and a depth that really made me want to photograph it…right away in my mind, i saw it on more of an experimental level, not really lending it any real serious thought as a good photograph…i still, in a way, see it like this, but upon a second look with new life as “something”…whatever that is…

i suppose this is how an evolution begins…styles, improvement, inspiration…all evolve from some sort of new thought on something old or something that already existed. maybe im way out of whack, but this is my blog and i suppose i can be out of whack. WHACK!

so here it is, in a place foreign to me…incubating my internet fancies, i arrive in the modern blogosphere. with me making the trip, are megabytes and links, pixels and a brain that hurts from the like…hunkered in a nice condo outside of sarasota, outside of norm(al), i begin…computer, my steed, lead me to the promised land (no biblical reference, rather a nod to “jeremiah johnson”, the movie i just finished watching…). lead me to an internet presence…to something resembling a room to rent, or food to eat, or something to my benefit in general!

todays activities were excellent, including a stop at the myakka state park. what a park! ah! those alliagators! sunning themselves and soaking up the attention of the ol’ folks on shores distant! it was a sight (or is that site??) to behold…and, since this is the technological age and its seemingly limitless possibilities are seemingly limitless…here it is, that sight/site in its full glory! from a matter of hours ago! from my eyes to your screen! next, ill be teleporting you to the actual spot, just click on the “teleport” link in the upper right hand corner…

a starting point…at this point(.)

i figure the point of all this is photography. simple. well, thats where it gets complex. its not (simple). its complex.

make a living with skills, passion and all that…at this point realizing that its photography is a bit of a stumbling block and nothing is really mapped out. feeling through it bit by bit, figuring on luck and not, is tough and probably will continue to be for a l o n g while yet. but hold on, the show isnt over. hasnt even hit intermission yet. not that there really is even a timeline. but this is a new, figurative line in the sand, and a starting point…at this point(.)

long live SH Inc. Photography!

long live struggling for reasons both known (to me) and unknown (to anyone)!

long live the souls who appreciate a service…say, photographing ANYTHING for reasonable exchange!
